Translated from Ludwig Distel's German.

With Robert Distel, the grandfather of the present owner of the same name, we come to the first ancestor still personally known to many, and one who stands close in kinship to the family's members as father, grandfather or great-grandfather. Robert Distel married, on 6 February 1896 at Villingen, the 25-year-old Frieda Frey of Grueningen. Her father was the landlord of the Gasthaus zur Traube there. The only child of this marriage who survived is Theodor Distel, born on 21 December 1896. But as early as 1899 his mother Frieda died. On 19 February 1903 the second marriage of the master butcher Robert Distel was solemnised in the Villingen Muenster. The new Frau Distel, and later the mother of six children - two more died in childhood - was Anna Zeller of Geisingen; in 1903 she was 21 years old. In this period, incidentally, the houses in Villingen were numbered street by street for the first time. Before that they had for a long time been numbered consecutively across the whole town, as is still occasionally the custom in small villages today. So our family's house and business premises received, instead of Niedere Strasse 375, today's designation Niedere Strasse 34. Under the direction of Robert and Anna Distel the butchery was able to extend and consolidate its position. For the conditions of the day it was an extremely modern concern. An early telephone connection and, above all, the installation of an electric chilling plant emphatically prove it. In 1912 Robert Distel bought the house at Herdstrasse 34 in the south of Villingen, built in 1908. Here the brood of children largely grew up. Stabling next door, today Herdstrasse 34/1, served the farming that the master butcher Robert Distel carried on alongside. At the time of the First World War Robert Distel leased his business out temporarily; reasons of health and the calling-up of his eldest son Theodor for war service were the causes.
