150 Years of the Distel Butchery [photograph of a carved coat of arms, captioned:] Family arms - that is a fitting occasion to give an account of the history of our family and, of course, of the business as well. Before we settled in Villingen Following the traces of our direct ancestors, the search for reliable records takes one a long way back. Here too there is an anniversary: the oldest exact record concerning our family comes from the Seitingen parish archive and is 350 years old. On 1 July 1636 the saddler Christian Distel of Seitingen married Maria Merz, a native of the neighbouring village of Gunningen, in that village. The places in the western district of Tuttlingen were at that time only partly Wuerttemberg territory, and so Protestant. Many villages, Seitingen and Gunningen among them, belonged to lordships that had remained Catholic: Fuerstenberg, for instance, the prince-bishopric of Konstanz, or the Further Austrian county of Hohenberg - which establishes the close connection with Villingen, likewise Further Austrian. Near that town, in the dependent village of Rietheim, Jakob Distel settled in 1713. He is the seventh child of the farmer Georg Distel of Gunningen. So on 7 June 1713 Jakob Distel married Elisabeth Simon of Rietheim in the parish church at Kirchdorf, which then had jurisdiction. For over 100 years Rietheim remained our ancestors' home. His son Anton and his grandson Mathias carried on the farm. Only in the 19th century did the Rietheim period end; elderly people of Rietheim were still able to show the author's father where the long-vanished "Distel-Hus" had stood. Vor unserer Niederlassung in Villingen Auf den Spuren der direkten Vorfahren kommt man bei der Suche nach gesicherten Daten weit zurueck. Auch hier ein Jubilaeum: Die aelteste exakte Angabe, unsere Familie betreffend, stammt aus dem Pfarrarchiv Seitingen und ist 350 Jahre alt. Am 1. Juli 1636 heiratete der Sattler Christian Distel aus Seitingen im Nachbarort Gunningen die dort beheimatete Maria Merz. Die Orte im westlichen Landkreis Tuttlingen waren damals nur teilweise wuerttembergisch und damit evangelisch. Viele Doerfer, auch Seitingen und Gunningen, gehoerten zu katholisch gebliebenen Herrschaften: beispielsweise zu Fuerstenberg, zum Hochstift Konstanz oder zur vorderoesterreichischen Grafschaft Hohenberg, womit der enge Zusammenhang zum ebenfalls vorderoesterreichischen Villingen hergestellt ist. In der Naehe dieser Stadt, im Dependenzort Rietheim, laesst sich Jakob Distel 1713 nieder. Er ist das siebte Kind des Bauern Georg Distel aus Gunningen. Am 7. Juni 1713 heiratet also Jakob Distel in der damals zustaendigen Pfarrkirche in Kirchdorf die Rietheimerin Elisabeth Simon. Ueber 100 Jahre bleibt Rietheim die Heimat unserer Vorfahren. Der Sohn Anton und der Enkel Mathias fuehren die Landwirtschaft weiter. Erst im 19. Jahrhundert endet die Rietheimer Zeit; alte Rietheimer konnten dem Vater des Verfassers noch den Standort des inzwischen abgegangenen „Distel-Hus" zeigen.
