Next we went by train to France and stayed just overnight on the outskirts of Paris and then travelled through the tunnel to England. We stayed in Picadilly and then hired a car to see Cornwall; my mother had friends there. We went to Scotland and Wales and actually left from there and took the car by ferry over to Ireland. We did some research into Pat's family history in Wexford. Pat really enjoyed that place a lot.
Judy, the most adventurous of our children, took a trip to Europe with her friend, Mandy, both being very young at the time when you think about it! Judy took the opportunity to visit Villingen; she is the only one of our children to have gone. Anyway, Judy ran out of money during her adventures and at first didn't want to tell us. As the story played out I eventually got called on. "Dear Dad..." It was quite a story!

Interesting facts
Irish records begin late. Civil registration of all births, deaths and marriages in Ireland only started in 1864. Before that there are parish registers, many Catholic ones starting no earlier than the 1820s or 30s, and a great deal of nineteenth-century material was destroyed in 1922. Going to the churches in person was not eccentric; it was the method.
