Interesting facts

The gate on the cover is the Riettor. One of the four gates of Villingen's medieval ring wall. The town kept its walls and gates long after most German towns pulled theirs down for building stone and road width, which is why a butcher's letterhead in 1986 could still use one as a landmark.
Aeltestes Fachgeschaeft am Platz. "The oldest specialist shop in the town." A Fachgeschaeft is a shop that sells one trade's goods and is staffed by people qualified in it - a distinction German retailing still draws, and a claim of standing rather than of size.
A number read in pairs. German telephone numbers were printed and spoken in pairs of digits, which is why 2 52 16 is spaced that way. The 07721 area code is Villingen-Schwenningen's and is still in use.
