Father met my mother in Melbourne and married her in about 1935.
Time passed and Alf joined the army in 1938 or '39. He was there until he was discharged or de-mobbed. That is what the army calls it when big numbers or a whole group leaves. Alf then tried to stay in Melbourne but didn't get along well with my mother; he was literally forced out of the house. I remember him taking me on little trips to markets; then he was told off that he had spent too much money on me. I didn't mind! I didn't mind at all! Silly things like that! So naturally my uncle remembered his girl up in Brisbane, a German girl, who he eventually ended up marrying. I didn't realize it at the time. I found out later.

Father had a hairdressing business in Melbourne, in the city. He had that up until the time he went to Walpa. That was the first break away from his trade. The business no longer exists.

Interesting facts
Queensland's German settlers. Queensland took large numbers of German migrants under assisted-passage schemes in the nineteenth century, and had established German-descended communities long before the 1930s. A newcomer arriving there was not arriving anywhere strange.
